The Sandy Effect on US Presidential Elections

Published

on

As the hurricane Sandy takes the US east coast in its grip, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney gets busy rescheduling their campaigns. The storm has introduced an element of uncertainty into a battle which is already so unpredictable. President Obama had left for Florida on Sunday evening for assemblies with Bill Clinton and then then had plans to move to Ohio on Monday. He had to cancel the third trip to come back to Washington to administer the respite retort to the storm.

The Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, also had to cancel his Monday rally in Virginia, and will instead shift his campaign in Ohio, the state, which is most likely to decide the outcome of the forthcoming Presidential Elections.

The superstorm Sandy was fast moving north on Sunday, along the coast with wind speed as high as 75 mph was likely to hit NY and NJ areas on Monday.

The effect of the storm on this election poll is difficult to measure; it has offered a chance to President Obama to show his leadership but has adversely impacted his campaign to get things in his favour.

Opinion polls still show the same old picture, with Mitt Romney leading slightly in the combined national surveys but just short of President Obama to conquer the states he must, in order to enter the White house office. There is a slight momentum shift in favour of Mitt Romney as the contest in Ohio, the place where President Obama enjoys a long held support, is narrowing a bit.

Although Romney and Obama both have endorsements from different newspapers, Romney has won the support of Des Moines Register, creating history, because he’s the maiden Republican candidate supported in a presidential election since 1972 by them.

Mitt Romney has also got the backing of papers in Iowa, while a good deal of time has been invested by President Obama on his campaign trail. To indicate electoral map favours the challenger, Joe Biden, VP is going to campaign on Thursday in Pennsylvania, a state where the play has recently started.

Both the campaigns claim advantage in the pre poll survey. Amidst the claims and counter claims of clear advantage by both the campaigns, it will be interesting to see, how the hurricane Sandy will affect the whole election scenario and may be the outcome of this contest.
