Obama remains U. S. President

Published

on

President Barack Obama has been re-elected on Tuesday night. He defeated the Former Governer of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, though at one stage the chances of his win were really dim due to the downfall in the economy during his first term.

During his address in his hometown of Chicago he had words of praise for Romney and strong optimism for the coming 4 years. Romney, also delivered a dignified speech in Boston in which he urged all Americans and political leaders to join hands with President Obama to solve the nationwide problems and issues. But even after an expensive and historical campaign, divided government is still in place as the Democrats managed to take control of the Senate quite easily.

There was a joyous atmosphere in Chicago, New York’s time Square, Washington and in Boston as there were people hugging each other, waving flags, cheering, dancing, and pumping feasts in these places. Even the drivers were found honking their horns joyously.

Over all, Obama managed to secure 55.8 millions of the popular vote which is 49.8% whereas Romney obtained 54.5 million which is 48.6% only.  President Obama pulled up a margin of 303 – 206 where at least 270 electoral votes were required to return to the White house. Out of the states he won in 2008, he could not win in Indiana and North Carolina only whereas it was indeed a very close affair in Florida.

Many believe that Obama has done a wonderful job in turning the tables around in this election as the downfall in economy was considered the topmost issue in the election. He managed to change the agenda of the election from only economy to various other issues and drawn voter’s attention to proposals of the two candidates.

After election, the employment presently stands at 7.9% which is much more than when President Obama assumed the office for the first time. After the biggest recession in history, the economy is trying build up slowly.

The states of Virginia, Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, Ohio and New Hampshire where it is believed that Romney and his supporters invested around one billion dollars in advertisements in television were lost by Romney. He could only win North Carolina among the frontline states. In a meeting Romney said “I so wish that I had been able to fulfill your hopes to lead the country in a different direction, But the nation chose another leader and so Ann and I join with you to earnestly pray for him and for this great nation.”

For Senate, there were 33 seats, the republican Scott Brown lost to Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts whereas the Republican Joe Donnelly, in Indiana won. In Nebraska, another Republican, Deb Fischer defeated Bob Kerry a former Senator. The independent former Governor Angus King has won against Senator Olympia Snowe.

The investments poured into the election campaign  was in billions. During the ad war it is believed that almost one billion were spent with Romney’s group spending more than 550 million dollars and Obama and supporter allegedly put in around $ 381.

As per the exit poll, 53% people believed that Obama was in constant touch people at the ground level whereas only 43% believed the same in case of Romney. 60% of the people were in favour of an increase in the taxes.

During the campaign, there were states that were totally untouched by both the candidates. Romney did not bother campaigning much in New York, California and Illionois whereas Obama left Texas, south and other portion of Rocky Moutain untouched.
