Arms Sale To Asia By U.S. To Boom On Pacific Pivot

Published

on

The sale of U.S. warplanes, anti-missile systems and other cutting edge technological weapons to China’s and North Korea’s neighbors appear for a significant growth amid security fears.

The strengthening of its treaty allies and security partners is of utmost importance to the White House pivot in the Pacific region which is shaken by the China’s maritime territorial dispute and the nuclear, and missile program in North Korea.

Fred Downey vice president for national security at the Aerospace Industries Association said the pivot will result in emerging opportunities for our industry to help endow our friends. The AIA is one of U.S. leading weapons manufacturer.

The trade group was commented that high tech U.S. weapons are expected to stay strong for few years. China’s growing military expenditure will lead to U.S. sales in Southern and Eastern part of Asia. The trade group comprised of Pentagon suppliers Lockheed Martin Corp, Boeing and Northrop Grumman did not predict numbers for its 2013 expectations.

The security agencies said sales agreements that the countries which were in the U.S. Pacific Command’s rose to $13.7 billion in 2012 which was 5.4 percent more than the previous year. These agreements resulted in future deliveries.

The total U.S. arms transfer agreement in 2011 was $66.3 billion in other words 78 percent of all such worldwide deals. The deal with Saudi Arabia which contributed to a record $33.4 billion and the Indian deal of $6.9 billion took the second spot in 2011.

The scheduled December election in Japan and South Korea could double the sales for U.S if pro- American Parties are elected. Such transfer of weapons will pave for alliance and long term Co-operation with nations. It also rewards Washington by fighting shoulder to shoulder in places such as Afghanistan and helps its allies in building their defenses.

The RQ-4 Global Hawk spy drones have been cleared for sale in South Korea which comes to $1.2 billion for Northrop Grumman. Global Hawk is infused with the Raytheon sensor which has the capability to scan a wide area for enemy concentrations by day or night. This would Seoul’s monitoring capability over North Korea.

The purchase of the Global hawk by Seoul is the first sale in Asia-Pacific. Japan, Singapore and Australia have also shown interest for the same. Japan was seeking a $421 million Aegis system upgrade for the guided missile destroyer. Japan has also agreed in hosting an X-Band radar station.

The F-35 Joint strike fighter is the highest-profile offer from the U.S. by its contractor Lockheed Martin which has radar evading capability or stealth technologies. Japan has already in deal to replace its F-4s with F-35 with the deal valued more than $5 billion. Singapore and South Korea have also shown interest towards the F- 35. Arms sale to Indian has risen to $8billion from near to nothing in 2008. Indian is panning a defense expenditure up to $100 billion over the next decade.
